Orkids launched its Parent Empowerment Network o-PEN
LAUNCH OF o-PEN
Orkids launched its Parent Empowerment Network o-PEN on the 17th of Feb at the India Islamic Cultural Centre.
It was attended by over 300 parents and professionals from not only Delhi but also other states of the country – we had parents and a few professionals from cities of Ludhiana and Jalandhar in Punjab, Indore in Madhya Pradesh, Lucknow from Uttar Pradesh and one even travelled across the Indian border from Chittagong Bangladesh.
The program started with felicitating the special guest invitees to the Event.
The first message was a video message by our Chief Guest – Hon’ble Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi Mr. Manish Sisodia. In the message he outlined the crucial need for such a parent platform and congratulated Orkids and its team on organising the event. He also encouraged the parents to join in this endeavour to make it a success.
The first presentation was the talk by the Board members of PEN – Parent Education Network, Silicon Valley – Mrs. Jenna Ellis, Board Chair & Katrina Maestri, Founding Member PEN. They spoke about how PEN evolved over the years – the struggles and challenges as well as benefits of a parent support network. The Talk was extremely inspiring for the parents who want to be able to participate and increase their awareness about the condition that their children are going through so they could be of help but have no clue how to go about it.
Next, there was a talk by an Ex-student of Orkids who had suffered great challenges during his academic life at school. It was heartening and inspiring to watch him talk about his current work status – being the pioneer in getting baseball to india. He floored the parents with his advice on how to handle and understand their children who are affected by learning challenges.
This was followed by a session of Parents Talk where a few parents shared their journey of life with children with Learning difficulties. Hearing stories from parents who have crossed the hurdle that many are facing gives strength to parents – a huge benefit of a parent support group.
Our last section included a talk by UNESCO on the 6th space followed by a talk by a panel by Experts on topics of Therapy, Legal advice, Career choices after school as well as financial and investment management for parents.
The program ended with an open house session with parents asking the experts their queries.
The program was hugely appreciated by Parents and professionals alike with many wanting to know how to proceed from here and take it forward.
